Frequently Asked Questions
Web hosting is one of those technologies that inspires a lot of frequently asked questions. Especially with the advent of Virtual Private Servers, the Cloud, Dedicated Servers and WordPress Hosting.
The aim of our FAQs is to get the commonly asked questions answered in non-techie language.
Webhosting is the infrastructure that permits bloggers, businesses, groups, and individuals to make their websites, apps, and databases visible to the Internet. Without webhosting, no one would be online.
Whether they’re self-hosted or using shared hosting, a semi-dedicated server, a dedicated server a VPS or the Cloud, every website is hosted on some type of a server.
The only way for a website to be visible or an app to work on the Internet is if it’s self-hosted or hosted by a webhosting service provider, better known as a webhost. To see a website or an app, you type the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) also known as the domain name – into your browser, (i.e., FireFox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Safari).
Your browser will then connect to the server and then display the requested website or app on your device’s screen.
GoCloudBased offers hosting plans to suit all website hosting needs.
Shared Hosting
Shared hosting is an entry-level hosting plan. It is best suited for start-up bloggers, personal websites, family websites, online resumes, and sites that are low to mid volume traffic. Of all the hosting plans, this is the most economical.
Duly note, shared hosting does come with some limitations. Clients on shared hosting plans are sharing server resources (CPU, RAM, and storage space) with other clients. In the event that one of the websites over utilizes their share of the resources on that server, it is possible that your site may experience slower response times.
While GoCloudBased works diligently to ensure that all sites on the shared hosting servers never interrupt any other site, there remains a possibility by reason of the nature of this hosting plan. Keep in mind that it is rare for any of our clients to experience issues after acquiring this hosting plan; we divulge this information because we believe in full disclosure. In any event, there is no problem upgrading to a more powerful plan if your traffic and server resources warrant such an upgrade.
So that you know outgrowing your Shared Hosting plan is great! In fact, you should view it as a positive movement. It means that your site traffic is increasing and it is a clear sign that you are on the path to online success.

Virtual Private Server
A Virtual Private Server, better known as a VPS, is a virtualized server. To break it down, the virtualization means that the VPS virtual environment mimics that of a dedicated server within a shared hosting environment. On the technical side, a VPS is merging of dedicated hosting and shared hosting.
What Is The Difference Between VPS Hosting, Shared, And Dedicated Hosting?
With our shared hosting plans, you reserve a small portion of a server along with other shared hosting clients. The costs savings is considerable when compared to a dedicated server or a VPS.
With our dedicated servers, you reserve control of an entire server. Dedicated servers are ideal for websites that are high traffic and for those who need to have their server structured in a particular way.
These are individuals running high-intensity software applications, web developers, app developers, eCommerce sites, HIPA related sites, and the like. If you are contemplating reserving a dedicated server but are uncertain if it is right for you, perhaps you should look into VPS hosting.
How Does Our VPS Work?
The technology powering our VPS hosting is similar to that of Virtual Box and VMware. These software applications enable you to run multiple virtualized OS Operating Systems on a single machine. For instance, within a virtual machine, you may be running Windows 10, but you can additionally run other operating systems including but not limited to Windows Server 2016, Solaris, MAC OS, Linux, all without requiring your computer to be restarted.
Each virtualized OS Operating System acts as though it is a dedicated server; this permits you to have the majority of the benefits of reserving a dedicated server but at a fraction of the cost.
The other benefits of our VPS hosting are as follows; you are the only one on your server. Meaning, you are not sharing operating systems, space, or resources. You can customize instances of your server applications.
That means if you need to customize PHP, MySQL, Apache, you have the freedom to do so. Need to restart your server? No problem; you can restart your virtual server without affecting any of the other VPS servers in that shared environment.

Semi-Dedicated Server
GoCloudBased’s Semi-Dedicated Servers offer you the perfect interim solution once you’ve outgrown the resources provided in our Shared Hosting plans. In short, this is your best option when you’re not entirely ready for the resources or expense that comes with a dedicated server.
Not only is a Semi-Dedicated Server more affordable than a Dedicated Hosting solution, but most importantly, you still get the advantage of being isolated from the other server users through virtualization. Your Semi-Dedicated account is created by taking a full server and dividing it into multiple smaller, virtual private servers.
Each of these virtual servers has dedicated hard drive space providing the isolation you want. With Semi-Dedicated Hosting, the other clients have a lesser impact on your performance compared to Shared Hosting.
You’ll be glad to know that you get the same easy to use cPanel control panel with your new Semi-Dedicated Hosting plan. You won’t have any learning curves thanks to cPanel’s intuitively user-friendly, GUI Graphical User Interface.
cPanel makes it easy to manage your: files, databases, emails, and websites.
Whether you’re deciding between Semi-Dedicated Hosting or a Dedicated Server Hosting solution from GoCloudBased, rest assured that you’ll experience a worry-free, seamless upgrade.
Dedicated Server
A Dedicated Server, also known as dedicated hosting, managed hosting service is an option in which a physical server is dedicated to one client. The client has complete control over that entire server or servers. Meaning, they can modify and optimize their server (or servers) for their particular requirements. GoCloudBased supplies the servers, associated services as well as tech support.
A dedicated server may be your best solution, if:
(a). You are using resource intensive software applications that demand a high-performance server
(b). You need the flexibility to make server adjustments on the fly
(c). You have a high traffic website that demands a high-speed server
(d). You have compliance demands, (i.e., HIPA, PCI Compliance)
(e). You have high-security demands
If you fit one or more of these requirements, talk to our sales team about acquiring a dedicated server.

Why You Should Switch To Cloud Hosting
GoCloudBased currently does not offer domain names.
We believe that a website owner, blogger, corporation, or business should NEVER have their domain name and hosting (bundled) together at the same company.
We could detail why not, but suffice it say, it is a bad idea because people make mistakes in life, and things happen. If your domain name and hosting are bundled together and let’s say one of the below occurs:
(a). You forget to renew your hosting account, your credit card expires, or there is an issue processing your payment, your hosting account goes through. You could potentially immediately lose your domain name because the name was never registered to you!
(b). Most webhosting companies that offer webhosting + domain name packages maintain control of the domain name. Meaning, you cannot transfer the domain to another Domain Name Registrar; that should be a MAJOR Red Flag!
We may offer domain names in the future, but if we do, you will be guaranteed to have full control!
What features should you look for in a Domain Name Registrar?
- free WHOIS Privacy Protection (which keeps your website registration details private)
- auto-renewals (so you don’t have to worry about a lapse in ownership)
- unlimited subdomains (like blog.yoursite.com, or mexico.yoursite.com, for example)
- domain setting controls at your fingertips (like MX records, CNAME, etc.)
- upsells (who wants to be bombarded with worthless offers?)
- renewal pricing should be not be sticker shocker!
If you want to migrate your website(s) to GoCloudBased, the first step is to set up your GoCloudBased account – you can do that from any of our product pages (Shared Hosting, VPS, Dedicated, Cloud Hosting).
During the course of signing up, choose the option to (add your current domain) to your new GoCloudBased account – don’t worry, this will NOT impact your existing live website! Nothing happens to your website until you change your DNS Servers.
Next, you will need to backup your website files and upload them to your new GoCloudBased account.
Once you have migrated your website to GoCloudBased’s servers, you will need to point your DNS Servers to the GoCloudBased Servers. After the new DNS Servers have propagated, test your website to verify that it appears and functions as you desire.
If these steps seem challenging, don’t worry. Our Tech Support Team can assist if necessary.

Services such as those are explicitly geared towards high volume emails that are HIPAA Compliant.
